This report examines state level 501(c)3 nonprofit employment and wages in 2022, how the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic impacted nonprofit employment, and how employment had recovered as of 2022. There is a supplemental data dashboard, which provides additional information on the number of nonprofit establishments operating in each state, the fields in which they are active, and how this changed during and in the years immediately following the COVID-19 pandemic.

2023 Illinois Nonprofit Workforce Shortages Report
In April 2023, more than 1,600 charitable nonprofit organizations throughout the United States
completed the nonprofit workforce shortages survey designed to gauge whether job vacancies
continue to be a problem for the missions of those organizations, how the vacancies impact
communities, and what actions have been taken and are proposed for alleviating the challenges.
Nearly fifty Illinois nonprofits provided insights that provide the substance of this report.

Nonprofit Sector Research Data - Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has updated research data on employment and wages for the nonprofit sector for the years 2018 through 2022. Nonprofit data are now available from 2007 through 2022. These figures provide insight into this important segment of the U.S. economy. This update includes employment, wage, and establishment figures for 501(c)(3) organizations at the national, state, metropolitan statistical area, and county levels, along with industry estimates at the total private, sector, subsector, and industry group levels.
